Organization type: NGO
Profile:
The future of earths biodiversity is dependent upon finding ways for humans to profit from their natural resourceswithout causing their destruction. Seeking this balance, Rare Enterprisesone of Rares three principal conservation programsuses ecotourism to jointly promote economic and environmental sustainability in ecologically fragile places.
The program offers a suite of toolsranging from nature guide training courses to soft loans for local entrepreneursthat help the communities that depend on protected areas develop successful ecotourism programs. For cash-strapped parks, this means generating a new source of income that can be funneled back into conservation projects. For communities in environmentally sensitive places, it means creating alternatives to high-impact fishing, logging, and other harmful activities.
